Lothian is a semi-rural community next to the Patuxent River in Southern Anne Arundel County Maryland.

The diverse neighborhood of farms, single family dwellings and mobile home parks was historically a quiet neighborhood.

Today the residents of Lothian co-exist with gravel pits, leaking sewage plants, abandoned brownfields, and industrial facilities that bring around 3,500 trucks trips per day to the narrow bridges and winding rural roads.

Residents in the community suffer a variety of privations not generally shared by other parts of the County.

Federal environmental justice databases have reflected several environmental health threats that require attention and resolution in order for the neighborhood and the neighbors to enjoy their homes and their lives in the community.
